Although it has a population of just around 100,000 inhabitants, the city of Bend, OR is considered the largest metropolitan area in Central Oregon. It is surrounded by some of the most beautiful national forests and reserves in the United States, making it a perfect base to go on unforgettable day trips with your friends or family. These are some ideas of places to go within a couple of hours by car from downtown Bend.

Mount Hood National Forest, OR

With more than a million acres of territory, the Mount Hood National Forest boasts some of the most spectacular landscapes in the state of Oregon. The place is named after Mount Hood, a potentially active stratovolcano with an elevation of more than 11 thousand feet and a snow-covered peak. This area is popular among winter sports lovers during the coldest months of the year when several centimeters of snow accumulate and form excellent slopes for both beginners and advanced skiers.

Apart from the beautiful mount, this national forest has photogenic clear-water lakes, several miles of hiking trails, designated camping areas, and a lodge dating back from 1937. Some of the most popular activities in the area include hunting, fishing, rafting, horse riding, and mountain biking, making it an excellent spot to visit all year round. From downtown Bend, the entrance to the Mount Hood National Forest is less than two hours away by car.

Crater Lake National Park

Boasting the deepest lake in the United States and the second in North America, the Crater Lake National Park is a popular tourist destination for visitors from all over the country. The park was established in 1902, with an area of more than 180,000 acres. Apart from the crater and its lake, some interesting sights include the Pumice Desert and the Pinnacles, formed as a result of a massive eruption that took place more than 7,000 years ago.

Getting to the Crater Lake National Park from downtown Bend takes a little under two hours by car, making it an excellent option for a day trip or a weekend escape. Within the territory of the park, there are several designated picnic areas and camping sites. If you want to learn more about the history of the area and the ancient Native American legends about it, hiring a local guide is a great idea.

Fremont – Winema National Forest

Spanning more than two million acres of territory, the Fremont – Winema National Forest was established in 2002 after a merger of what were previously two separate natural reserves. The area is managed by the United States Forest Service and has become a popular destination for its wilderness, amazing landscapes, and the various outdoor activities that can be performed all year round. From downtown Bend, the entrance to the park is just 100 miles away, following route US-97 S.
