Explore the Lava River Cave
Go on a family adventure to the Newberry National Volcanic Monument on 58201 S. Highway 97 in Bend to explore the Lava River Cave. Take a self-guided tour of the mile-long lava tube and walk along the boardwalk, over uneven surfaces, and climb stairs to marvel at one of the first lava tubes discovered in Oregon.
The entrance is a hole in the ground, and the trail drops suddenly down to a large chamber with ice stalactites and stalagmites. The volcanic rock ceiling in the tunnel’s main section reaches 58 feet above the floor, and the roof dips to about 5.5 feet in other areas.
